    It this crazy time of year when your to do list is longer than the yellow brick road, it is hard to be upbeat about getting everything done in time!


    And yet, there is a big difference between saying “I have to” do something versus “I get to” do something?
     
    It’s all about your perspective. Oftentimes, the things we “have to do” are actually rewarding.
     
    For example,  “I have to” buy gifts, attend parties, plan menus, wrap presents, etc. The rewards are numerous. “I get to” create a special event for my friends and family, thank those that have been good to me all year, and share festivities with colleagues. “I get to” enjoy the Holiday lights around the city. “I get to” connect with loved ones far and wide and share my family traditions.

    During this time of the year, it is so easy to get overwhelmed and forget we “get to” do whatever we choose to enrich our lives, take care of ourselves, enjoy our loved ones and so much more.

    One of my favorite ways to let stress melt away is this simple exercise, which you can do either sitting or lying down:

    • Feel the support of whatever is holding you; really give way to it and let all of your muscles relax.
    • Allow the chair, bed or floor to completely support you.
    • Feel the sensation of being held in all the places that are touching the chair, bed, or floor.
    • Take three deep breaths, and let all your tension go on each exhale.
    • Then imagine yourself with someone, doing something or being somewhere that brings you joy.
    • See it, taste it smell it, feel it in all the cells of your body.
    • Take three more deep breaths and let the joy-filled sensations enter and inhabit your body. Enjoy these sensations, and notice any shifts in your mood and body.

    How often have we said a variation of, "I hope things go well?” 
     
    “Hope” can be a self-defeating word. If things don’t go right, we are disappointed – and we may not learn and grow from the actual outcome.
     
    Consider replacing  “I hope” with "I wonder." Open yourself up to the possibilities and embrace the outcome, no matter what it is. This shift might sound something like, ”I hope the board approves our budget. Or, I wonder what suggestions the board will offer for our budget.“ This simple shift is a powerful one – try it with a few things you are “hoping” about now.

    How often do we say “if only” s/he would do X or “when” I do X?

    Living in the “if only” and “when” is exhausting and frustrating. Learn to accept “what is” by keeping a gratitude journal. Every morning or night, write down three to five things you were thankful for that day.

    You will soon see that “what is” is exactly what you need right now.

    Awareness is the first step in any desired change. Take a time-out at work or after a busy day to just be aware of “you.”

    • Sit or lay down and close your eyes
    • Starting at the top of your head, slowly trace the outline of your body going down the left side and coming up the right
    • Notice the special nuances that are uniquely yours
    • Place your hands on your thighs
    • Feel the sensation of your hands resting on your skin, and notice the awareness that arises
    • Say to yourself, “My skin is an important boundary.  As I become aware of my skin, I become aware of my Self.”

    When we are living through a particularly stressful period in our lives, it can seem almost impossible to relax. Try this relaxation technique (an especially good practice for those who say, “I just can’t relax!”):

    • Start by just noticing your breath. Where are you breathing from? Deep within you? A shallow place? Is your breathing smooth?
    • Starting with your feet, tense and relax each part of your body, one by one
    • When you tense a muscle, pull it as tight as you can without hurting yourself
    • As you tighten, become fully aware of this part of your body
    • As you relax, notice the feeling of release and well-being that follows

    When you ask the universe a question, do you listen for the answer? The only way you will hear it is to make space in silence.

    With silence, you can:

    • Notice your bodily sensations (what draws your attention)
    • Meditate on the big picture (what have you been missing?)
    • Mull over obstacles – being curious as to what you can learn
    • Allow your heart to be open to new ideas

    Worrying about what may or may not happen drains our energy and keeps us from living in and enjoying the moment. The next time you feel as if a worry will take over your mind, consciously direct your worry to float away.

     

    Let each worry float away as if it were a balloon. Give the universe the opportunity to step in and move the worries in another direction. As you detach your thoughts from each area of concern, allow your energy to return to you. Rest, and allow ease to fill your body.

    When you go to work tomorrow, focus your energy on your surroundings rather than worrying about your long to-do list once you arrive. Try to notice what is new and different:

    • A new sign on the sidewalk in front of the deli
    • New decoration in a garden or in a window
    • The number of people waiting at a bus stop
    • Newly planted flowers in front of your favorite cafe
    • A freshly swept stoop

    By looking for the new in the mundane, you practice being in the present moment. This simple practice will help clear your mind for increased attention, creativity and allow you to enter your work day with calm and readiness.

    Feeling particularly anxious? Try this activity:

    • Take off your shoes, stand in a comfortable spot, close your eyes, and feel your feet on the floor
    • Rock your feet from side to side
    • Go up on your toes
    • Rock back onto your heels
    • Once again, rock from side to side
    • Wiggle your toes
    • Then allow as much of your foot as possible to touch the floor, and rest there
    • Imagine your feet becoming broader and wider
    • Imagine roots growing from your feet down into the Earth
    • Notice that your body feels stronger as energy rises up from your feet
    • Take pride in your strength as you anchor yourself to the energy in the Earth
